  1. Kelly,

Here are some humble recommendations sort of listed by director (my apologies if you’ve already seen or mentioned some of these in previous posts):

-Amadeus (always in consideration as my favorite of all time)
-One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
-Manhattan (my favorite Woody Allen movie, tied with Stardust Memories, although apparently Mr. Allen wasn’t too fond of it)
-Who’s That Knocking At My Door (Really interesting to see Scorsese’s work so early on and to see some of the roots of the themes that have followed him his entire career. Also a really good flick in its own right)
-Cape Fear (Scorsese’s. Haven’t seen the original though I hear it’s good, too)
    -Sanjuro (sequel to Yojimbo)
-Seven Samurai (Akira Kurosawa was the director that got me into film. All of his work with Toshiro Mifune is incredible. He’s made a lot of other great non-Samurai films as well but these are my favorite)
    -The 400 Blows
    -A Woman is a Woman
    -Masculine Feminine
    -Band of Outsiders
-The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (one of my favorite movies made in the last 10 years)
    -The Hustler
-The Thin Red Line (favorite Malick)
    -The Deer Hunter
-The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
    -Gone Baby Gone
-I’m Still Here (one of the most underrated and misunderstood movies, ever, maybe)
    -On the Waterfront
-Hamlet (only the one with Kenneth Branagh, from 1996 I think)
    -City Lights
    -The Mission
-Once Upon a Time in America (only if you can find the director’s cut!)
    -The Untouchables

    I’ll stop there.

Also I have these movies on DVD from your list if you would like to borrow them:

    Stardust Memories
    The King of Comedy
    Match Point

  2. Thanks for the recommendations. Some of these I have seen others I will need to look at adding to my second list.
Love Manhattan and One Flew Over the Cuckoos nest is one of my favorites.
